Lynnette Reye Hamel

Lynnette Reye Hamel, age 56, died May 14, 2018 at her home in Shawnee, KS after battling breast cancer and most recently, peritoneal cancer.  She was born April 9, 1962 in Concordia, KS, the daughter of Gene and Jean Johnson.

Lynnette graduated from Concordia High School in 1980 and then Cloud County Community College in 1982 with her Associate’s Degree in Secretarial Science and Medical Transcription. She was a dedicated worker for Scrivner-Boogaart, Inc. from 1982-1994 where she met Jim Hamel, also a Concordia native. They were married on Feb. 1, 1992. This union was blessed by the birth of their daughter, Kelsey Reye Hamel on November 1, 1993.  Lynnette left her job, choosing to stay home to raise their daughter. Jim was transferred to the Kansas City area, and the family then made their home in Shawnee. After they relocated, Lynnette began what would become sixteen years of cleaning homes for others, and formed many relationships with her clientele that she would call close friends forever.

Lynnette was loved by her family, former co-workers and friends. She loved to make her home, and the homes of others, into a beautiful place where people felt welcome and cared for. When she wasn’t working, she was helping others. She anticipated everyone’s needs and always put others needs before her own. Lynnette had a caring heart and soul that reached for anyone and everyone, especially God. She attended Crossroads Christian Church, Shawnee, KS. She was loving and caring to her family and pets, and especially enjoyed cheering on KU basketball.

Lynnette is survived by her daughter, Kelsey Hamel, Shawnee; step-daughter, Pam Hamel, Colorado Springs; father, Gene Johnson, and brother, Kevin Johnson (Sheri) of Concordia; sister, Kim Oatney (Jim), Waterville; mother-in-law, Gloria Hamel, and sister-in-law, Janice (John) Strait, Concordia; brothers-in-law, Greg (Julie) Hamel, Lawrence, Bob (Brenda) Hamel, Osborne, and sister-in-law, Tammy (Doug) Woellhof, Buena Vista, Colorado. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

Lynnette was preceded in death by her mother, Jean Johnson in 2006, her husband, Jim Hamel in 2017, and her grandparents.

The family wishes to express their gratitude and thankfulness to the many caring neighbors, family and friends who were constantly checking on Lynnette and helping her in any way they could.

A Celebration Of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, May 22nd at 11:00 am at Crossroads Christian Church, 5855 Renner Rd, Shawnee, with Pastor Brad Fogo officiating.  Interment will be at 2:30 at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Rd, Leavenworth, KS. Visitation is Monday, May 21st from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the church.

The family asks memorials be given in Lynnette’s name to Crossroads Christian Church in care of: The Family of Lynnette Hamel, 22600 W. 53rd Terrace, Shawnee, KS 66226.
