J. Alex Huddleston

It is with great sadness that the family of J. Alex Huddleston (Alex), 28, of Overland Park, KS, announces his passing on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in Prairie Village, KS.

Alex was born July 5, 1990 in Merriam, KS to Leigh Huddleston. He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School and earned his BA in Communications from The University of Missouri Kansas City.

An art enthusiast and music fanatic, both Alex’s work and also his leisure time often revolved around his passion for craft beer. During baseball season, he could frequently be found at The K, cheering on his beloved Royals. Alex spent his life in the Kansas City area, but felt at home in the natural beauty of Colorado and the Pacific Northwest.

Alex will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Leigh Huddleston of Overland Park, KS; his grandparents Linda and John Gorman of Overland Park, KS and Jim Huddleston and Marilyn King of Lawrence, KS; multiple other family members who loved him dearly and wonderful friends who were like family; and his dog, Gem.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial reception Sunday, Nov. 4 from 12-4 p.m. at the VIP Backstage Lounge @ CrossroadsKC, 1830 Locust St Unit A, Kansas City, MO 64108 (Access via parking lot on the Oak St. side of the block. Look for the Glass Doors.)

Alex loved animals, especially dogs, and was an advocate for pet adoption. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to KC Pet Project at https://kcpetproject.org/donate/.

Remembering Alex always brings a smile. Fun summers at Hilton Head with cousins. Shooting the rapids on a wild river at a family reunion, Going to the Atlanta Braves game. Eating Tex Mex in KC. Amy’s wedding. Whatever the occasion Alex was always a genuine pleasure to be with. Our hearts ache knowing the pain that my brother Jim and nieces Leigh and Amy are feeling with the loss of Alex. Praying they can replace that painful, empty feeling with gratitude for having him in their lives at all. We love you guys.

I treasure every memory of time with Alex. Our family reunion in Atlanta, shooting the rapids on the river, The Braves game, Eating Mexican food in KC. Amy’s wedding, the many summers at Hilton Head with cousins and family. My heart aches knowing the pain that my brother Jim and my nieces Leigh and Amy are feeling with the passing of Alex. Try to replace that pain and sadness with gratitude for having had this wonderful guy in your life even for a brief time.

I am a friend of Alex’s grandparents, Linda and John Gorman. Although I never knew Alex, I enjoyed listening to his grandma tell loving, funny little stories about Alex. I know she loved him unconditionally and she and John are devastated by Alex’s passing. My thoughts and sympathy go to his family and friends.

My heart is broken for the loss of my dear friend.. his contagious laugh and huge beautiful smile is how I will always remember him. I will raise Noah to always know and love you as I do. I wish I knew how lonely you were so I could have been by your side always and made sure you knew how much everyone loved you.
To my beautiful Leigh, you are my life soulmate and I would give anything to take your pain away. I will always be by your side and help carry on the legend of your beautiful baby boy wonder!! Every ounce of my soul hurts for you. I love you both dearly and always will

She tell me that I get her high ’cause an angel’s s’posed to fly, and…
I ain’t askin’ “Why?” no more
Oh, no, I take it if it’s mine, I don’t stay inside the lines
    It ain’t 2009 no more
Yeah, I know what’s behind that door
Yeah, okay you gotta jump in to swim
Well, the light was dim in this life of sin
Now every day I wake up and breathe
I don’t have it all but that’s all right with me
Take it nice and easy, took a flight to see me
Send you back home with a light that’s beamin’
The whole team ’bout to figure it out
We ice cold, that’s what winter about
And sometimes, sometimes I wish I took a simpler route
Instead of havin’ demons that’s as big as my house, mhmm
Have a ball with a dribble and bounce
‘Cause the party ain’t over ’til they’re kickin’ me out, yeah
Isn’t it funny? We can make a lot of money
Buy a lot of things just to feel a lot of ugly
I was yea high and muddy
Lookin’ for what was lookin’ for me

My heart hurts. Alex will forever be the 6th grader who came to my classroom thinking he could not do math…..: he won the math award that year! He kept in touch with me over the years he will always be a favorite in my heart, and I will miss him.

Alex always had a smile on his face. One day, when I knew our company was going down the toilet, a few of us headed toward Grinders for some lunch. Alex waited on us and was so surprised that we ordered tequila, he text his mom and said, “Bernie Lee is in here with some other reps and ordered shots of tequila at lunch.” That’s just the kind of guy he was. He knew his friends and customers. I will miss your smile Alex. Even though you weren’t a religious type of guy, I sang to you last week at church. I hope you enjoyed it.

Leigh, My heart broke for you when I heard about Alex. I remember going to your apartment with Beth to meet Alex right after he was born. What a blessing he was… I wish there was something I could do to take your pain away. Please know that you are heavy on my mind…

What a lovely guy. I shall always remember Alex’s quick wit and lively conversation on just about any subject you could name. He definitely had opinions and was never shy about sharing them. We miss him already.

Leigh I I’m so sorry for your loss. Alex had a great sense of humor and adventure. I know you will treasure the moments in your heart that you got to be his mama. Love you girl and I’m sending you lots of good energy for strength, courage and wisdom during this awful hard human time. You are amazing and more resilient than you could ever imagine. And I know Alex loves you to the Moon and back. He told me himself. On multiple occasions.
