Maria Grace “Riea” Manning

Manning, Riea

MARIA GRACE “RIEA” MANNING, 92, of Kansas City, Kansas died July 24, 2018 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was an only child, 100% Irish, born to John and Julia McClafferty in Newark, New Jersey on September 7, 1925. She graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and spent her teenage summers going to the shore with lifelong friends. She attended Traphagen School of Design in New York City and decorating homes became an endless passion.

She met “Joe O’Neal” in New York City as a handsome Irish Navy pilot. She later learned the name was helpful to him in keeping the young women at bay. His real name was Bud Manning. Riea moved to Kansas City under most unusual circumstances and married that handsome Irish navy pilot in 1947. Some who saw the girl from back East said, “She set this town on its ear!” She and Bud started their Irish Catholic family and had 10 children in 10 years. When the youngest of the 10 went to school, their baby girl Lori Ann came along.

She began Riea Manning Interiors. Some of her notable projects were Bishop Ward auditorium, The Cathedral Rectory, homes in Westheight, numerous friends’ homes and always her own home.

As a nominee for Mrs. Kansas in 1963 she wrote, “I am happy and content. I thoroughly enjoy being a wife and mother. I grew up an only child and prayed hard for a large family of my own. I am spending my life doing what I have always wanted to do – taking care of my husband and children. The majority of my time is doing just that – making a home instead of keeping a house.” She was chosen and became Mrs. Kansas that year. Others may have accomplished more, but she accomplished a mountain of small things.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bud 1987, sons Rick 1979, Mark 2010, daughter Lori Ann Wiedner 2010 and grandson Sam Cigich 2015.

She leaves behind 8 children; Terry (Terri Rodina), Neal (Bonny Barnett), daughters in law Vicki Lind and Rita Manning-Cigich, Chris (Suzy Kascht), Kathy (Dick) Tearney, Brian (Mimi Kanatzar), Diane (Rob) Metcalf, David (Kelli Salmon), Jeff (Judy Gifford) and son in law Steve Wiedner.

33 grandchildren; Jay (Cheryl) Manning, Shane (Heather) Manning, Levi Manning, Ryan (Mandi) Manning, Corey (Viviana) Manning, Brigid (Shane) Shinn, Joseph Manning, Colleen (Josh) Kirk, Irene (Tyler Bachert) Manning, Rick Manning, Kaitlin (Calvin)Webster, Treat Metcalf, Greg Manning, Andy Hite, Ryan Hite, Molly (Paul) Gibson, Faith Manning, Matthew Metcalf, Ellen Wiedner, Emily Manning, Jennifer Gifford, Cassie (Tani) Dilaveri, Paddy Manning, Jeremiah Manning (fiancée Kellie), Grace Manning, Zach Manning, Emma (Chris) Ashworth, Shawn Manning, Hope Manning, Mark Manning (fiancée Danielle), Morgan Manning and Jack Wiedner.

Riea also leaves behind her faithful friend, Dolly, the black lab.

Both services will be at St Peter’s Cathedral, 416 N 14th St, Kansas City, KS 66102. Visitation 4-8pm Rosary at 4pm Thursday, Aug 2. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11am Friday Aug 3.

Interment at Leavenworth National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Paralyzed Veterans of America or Catholic Community Hospice.

Mom; thank you for the way you lived, and thank you for the way you died.

Your prayers have been answered.

    Dear Manning family,
May God bless you and comfort you all in this time of sorrow. Riea was a wonderful mother/grandmother/great grandmother. Her laugh was precious and her sense of humor was the best!
I can’t help but smile on the inside when I think about the legacy she is leaving behind. What an honor for all the generations that have been touched and will be blessed by the adorable life she lived. Her smiling Irish eyes will live on in our hearts forever.
    Sincerely,
    Danny and Kerry Bledsoe

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. What a wonderful experience it always was to come to the Manning house on 15th St. There was ALWAYS something going on, and Mrs. Manning never seemed to get anxious about anything.
