Nancy Schmalbeck

unnamed

Nancy Schmalbeck passed away on September 3rd, 2020 at Hospice House in Kansas City. She was born April 30, 1952 in Joliet, Illinois to Betty (nee Strecker) and George Schmalbeck.

As the family moved, Nancy grew up in several states including Illinois, Missouri, and Colorado. She attended Junior High and High School in California. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and her Master’s Degree at the University of Kansas.

Nancy worked for Vista, a national service agency upon graduating from the University of Missouri at St. Louis. She was subsequently employed by the IRS in California. Nancy left that job to pursue a Master of Business Administration at the University of Kansas. After receiving her masters at KU, Nancy was employed by the United States Department of the Treasury as a National Bank Examiner for the remainder of her working career.

Nancy and Janet Nesch were partners for many years before marrying in 2012. Janet preceded Nancy in death in 2014.

Nancy had many interests outside of work including KU basketball, Royals baseball, reading and book clubs, and crafts. She was an avid fan of Walt Disney World and a Disney Vacation Club member, traveling there frequently with Janet as well as family and friends. Nancy was a “foodie” and usually knew the best places to get popcorn, biscuits, a concrete, chocolate or any number of tasty food items.

She was a thoughtful and considerate friend and family member.

Nancy’s children were her cats, Max and Maya. They lived a luxurious lifestyle and were much loved with Nancy doting on them.

Nancy is survived by her four brothers: Ken (Terri), Rich (Linda), Don (Doris), and Dave (Alice). She is also survived by nieces and nephews as well as sister and brother in law, Kathryn and Jim Williamson.

Nancy, sad to learn that you had passed. I had been gone for nine months and learned of your passing when I returned home. I remember fondly our working together at the OCC and our shared love of going to the movies in our retirement. I hope you found peace in your final days.
